MIME AND THE PERFORMER
Mime teaches the theatre performer to communicate physically as well as vocally. Performance in theatre demands skill in developing full characterizations including the character’s walk, physical behavior, and general physical presence, as well as clear and expressive gesture. Many actors can’t move and can only communicate vocally; most singers are notoriously stiff. With the study of mime, performers learn to be physically relaxed on the stage, they learn to gesture, and they experience the basis of the kinds of characterization that the varied situations in all theatre demand. They learn economy of move. ment: when to gesture, and when to remain still. And, they learn to project a large clear image; this is vital, particularly in the large theatres of today. The aim of all mime technique exercise is to gain control of every separate part of the body in every possible direction, so that whatever movement one wants to make can be made, whatever physical posture is necessary for a character can be sustained, whatever physical image in space is necessary can be performed.
