THE LANGUAGE OF MIME

THE LANGUAGE OF MIME

Mime (or pantomime, the words mean the same thing) is communication by gesture. It can be communication of an idea, an emotion, a story, but it is never the acting out of words. It should not even use verbal concepts, only physical concepts. For instance, if an actor points to another actor (signifying “you"). and then beckons (signifying “come"), and then points to the ground in front of him (signifying “here’), he is behaving verbally. He is literally acting out words. For him to communicate physically, all he need do is beckon, which tells the “you, come here" story more economically. If an actor wants to communicate to an actress that he loves her, he must neither mouth the words “I love you," nor would he point to himself (“I"), point to his heart (“love"), point to her (“you"). As a mime, he would communicate his love by the way he looks at her and behaves toward her, not by acting out words. The language of the mime must be universal so that practically anybody on this planet can understand his story. Mouthing the words “I love you" would not be understood in France or China, but a look of love, and behavior and responses with the feeling of love in it would be understood anywhere.
