Objects

Objects

The mime uses no sets, no props, no devices. His only means of communication is his own body, driven by his ideas and emotions: This body must be trained. skilled, taut, flexible, supremely expressive. It is his instrument, his tool, his keyboard, his canvas and paint. If he needs a chair, he creates one out of air. and sits on it as if it were real; if his story calls for a ball, or a tennis racquet. or a stove, or a tall hat, or an egg, or a locked door, or a heavy weight, or anything else, he creates them, gives them substance and the illusion of reality. without any real object being present. Ability to handle imaginary objects will be of use to most actors in most plays. While it is true that you will generally be handling a real coffee cup or whiskey glass, the substance in it will not be whiskey—it will be tea or syrup in water. The actor must, with his imagination and skill in handling the imaginary, turn it into what the script calls for. When Othello has to strangle Desdemona, he must create an imaginary Desdemona whose neck is a sixteenth of an inch larger than that of the actress portraying her. He must strangle that imaginary neck with all his strength and energy as if it were real, while the actress who plays Desdemona pretends to die. His physical skill and control will be vital to the performance. In addition to this kind of situation, there are actually imaginary props in many plays: windows between the actors and the audience that must be opened, imaginary doors, and so forth. Most actors handle them badly, and instead of creating the image, destroy the illusion. Their windows wobble, they forget to let go of doorknobs, etc. Mime training teaches you how to use imaginary objects, and in addition, your awareness of how objects should be handled gives more clarity to your handling of real objects.
